Accident: Lac des Tours, ON. 01-Jan-1978. During a landing attempt on a rough lake surface, the aircraft struck snow drifts and both main gear legs failed. None of the eight on board were injured.

Destroyed

Otter 450 was delivered on 16th March 1965, registered CF-RWK and was retained by DHC as a demonstrator aircraft. It was sold to La Sarre Air Service Ltd., of La Sarre, Québec in April 1967. After more than a decade of incident-free service in the bush country of Quebec, it sustained damage in a landing accident at Lac des Tours, Ontario on 16th January 1978, on a day when the temperature was -18C. During a landing attempt on a rough lake surface, the Otter struck snow drifts and both main gear legs failed. None of the eight on board were injured. The aircraft was repaired and returned to service with La Sarre Air Service, which merged into Propair Inc in 1982. Otter RWK continued flying with Propair until an accident at Camp Placier, Québec on 20th April 1987.

The Otter, with five occupants on board, was on a charter from its base at Chibougamau to Camp Placer, 206 miles to the north-east. At destination, a sand runway 2,200 feet in length and 100 feet in width had been built on an esker. On either side, there was a 100 foot gradient with a thirty degree slope. The wind speed was twenty knots. According to the operating manual, the wind exceeded the seven knot cross-wind limitation for the aircraft under such conditions. When the tail wheel touched down, the Otter turned nose to the wind, left the runway and came to rest at the bottom of the esker, in a sorry state. The Otter was destroyed in the accident.
